At Greyfriars Nursery, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework forms a basis for everything we do. We agree that every child deserves the best possible start in life and we aim to support each individual child to fulfil their potential.
The EYFS sets the standards that we, and all early years providers, must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It helps us ensure that your child is ready for school and for life.

The core principals of the Early Years Foundation Stage are:
- Every child is a unique child
- Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
- Children learn and develop well in enabling environments
- Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.

By following the EYFS, we ensure that your child will be learning new skills and gaining knowledge and independence.
The primary areas of development for children are:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development.

As children develop, there are four more specific areas for development:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design.

We plan your child’s learning and activities to ensure their development in these areas. At this age, children learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking. Each child has unique needs, so we work with parents to make sure that activities are suited to their child.
